SMS FIREWALL

Protecting networks. Recovering revenue.

Grey routes and SIM box fraud cost mobile operators billions in unmonetized A2P traffic every year. IDT global’s SMS Firewall gives MNOs real-time control over every message on their network, classifying traffic, blocking bypass routes, and ensuring commercial SMS terminates over the channels that generate revenue.

With over two decades of global telecom expertise and operations spanning 200+ countries, IDT global delivers SMS Firewall solutions built for the complexity of live carrier networks.

Join IDT and leverage SMS, “the language of 6 billion people”.

IDT SMS Firewall – The Best Protection

Every SMS that enters your network passes through IDT’s classification engine, which analyses the message’s origination, Sender ID, content, and routing path to determine whether it is P2P or A2P traffic.

Grey routes, where A2P traffic is disguised as P2P to avoid commercial termination fees, are identified in real time and blocked or redirected to official routes, eliminating revenue leakage without disrupting legitimate traffic.

The firewall operates across all relevant signalling layers (SS7, SMPP, SIP) and integrates with SMS Home Routing to keep subscriber IMSI and location data private, even from interconnect partners.

IDT SMS Firewall – Our C.O.R.E. Principles

Compliance

IDT global provides SMS Home Routing according to the 3GPP TR 23.840 standard. It supports TCAP Handshaking on MT submission and is 3GPP TS 33.200 compliant.

3GPP is a standards organization originally assembled with a goal of developing specifications for third generation (3G) mobile networks. Closely linked with GSMA they provide several industry standards and studies.

FAQ

What is an SMS Firewall?

An SMS Firewall is a network-layer solution that monitors, classifies, and filters all SMS traffic passing through a mobile operator’s network. It analyses each message’s origination, routing path, Sender ID, and content to determine whether it is legitimate P2P or commercial A2P traffic. Messages identified as fraudulent, unsolicited, or routed through unauthorised grey routes are blocked or redirected in real time.

What is a grey route in SMS?

A grey route is an unauthorised path used to deliver A2P SMS traffic while bypassing commercial termination agreements between operators and messaging providers. Bulk SMS providers use grey routes to avoid A2P termination fees by disguising commercial messages as P2P traffic, resulting in direct revenue loss for the operator. An SMS Firewall detects grey routes by identifying mismatches between message content, Sender ID, and routing metadata.

What is smishing and how does an SMS Firewall prevent it?

Smishing is a phishing attack carried out via SMS, where fraudsters impersonate trusted organisations, banks, delivery companies, or government agencies, to steal personal or financial data. An SMS Firewall prevents smishing by applying content analysis, Sender ID verification, and URL scanning to filter fraudulent messages before they reach subscribers.

What protocols does IDT’s SMS Firewall support?

IDT’s SMS Firewall supports SS7 (MAP), SMPP, and SIP across both on-net and off-net traffic. It integrates with SMS Home Routing in compliance with 3GPP TR 23.840 and 3GPP TS 33.200 standards, and is compatible with virtual, cloud-based, and traditional bare-metal network deployments.

What is SMS Home Routing and why does it matter?

SMS Home Routing directs all inbound messages through the home network before delivery, preventing external networks from querying subscriber location data via the HLR. This closes a critical signalling security vulnerability and protects subscriber privacy. IDT’s firewall includes SMS Home Routing as a core component, compliant with GSMA guidelines and 3GPP TR 23.840.

What is a SIM box and how is it detected?

A SIM box is a device containing multiple SIM cards used to terminate international A2P traffic as local P2P traffic, bypassing interconnect fees and operator agreements. IDT’s firewall detects SIM box activity by analysing traffic patterns, Sender ID inconsistencies, IMSI behaviour, and message volume anomalies, blocking identified traffic in real time to prevent revenue leakage.

How long does SMS Firewall deployment take?

The Zero CapEx managed option offers the fastest time to market, with IDT handling full setup and integration. Low CapEx and Full CapEx deployments involve deeper network integration and include a structured onboarding and training programme. Contact our team for a deployment timeline specific to your network architecture.

Does IDT’s SMS Firewall require upfront investment?

No upfront investment is required under IDT’s Zero CapEx model, which operates on a revenue-share basis with the firewall fully managed by IDT. For operators who prefer greater control, Low CapEx and Full CapEx options are also available. All three models include access to IDT’s technical expertise and support.
